Ana de Armas is currently a happy New York City resident, but in a revealing new interview, she explained exactly why she fled Los Angeles—and her breakup from one very famous actor had a lot to do with it.
De Armas’s relationship with Ben Affleck tossed her into the Hollywood spotlight before the film they starred in together, Deep Water, even premiered. The two dated for about 10 months, starting in March 2020, and were spotted on romantic vacations around the world, including in de Armas’s native Cuba, as well as Costa Rica and, of course, Los Angeles.
Speaking with ELLE, de Armas said the paparazzi and media attention she got because of the romance was “horrible,” adding, “That’s one of the reasons why I left L.A.”
In May 2020, de Armas and Affleck became Instagram official, with the actress sharing photos of the two hiking. And later that month, they were filmed making out in the middle of the desert in rapper Residente’s “Antes Que el Mundo Se Acabe” music video.
De Armas met Affleck’s children with Jennifer Garner and in August 2020 was even spotted moving into his house. But after spending the holidays together, the two called it off. Per reports, the actors broke up via a phone call in January 2021. Later that month, de Armas deleted her Twitter account and soon after made the move to New York City. (“I deleted Twitter years ago,” she said in the interview. “I have barely been on Instagram for almost a year.”)
De Armas told ELLE she had seen other performers’ lives be scrutinized by the public, but when it happened to her, she realized she needed to leave California.
“Going through it [myself] confirmed my thoughts about, ‘This is not the place for me to be,'” she said. “It became a little bit too much. There’s no escape. There’s no way out.”
Now, de Armas lives in New York with her boyfriend, Tinder executive Paul Boukadakis, whom she met during the pandemic. Affleck, meanwhile, is engaged to Jennifer Lopez, whom he first dated (and was also engaged to) in the early 2000s.
