Oc- casionally I see a bumper sticker that reads: When my fellow-Christians invited me to write letters to them I did so.
When someone is this engaged, this excited and this informed about what they are writing and obsessed in it is impossible not jeaus feel your pulse race as you read.
I had been born for real only fifteen years earlier, but this was a new and exciting experience for me, and it got me started on a lifelong journey of faith that has taken enormous twists and turns, ending up in a dead end that proved to be, in fact, a new path that I have since taken, now well over thirty years later. Religious and biblical scholar Bart Ehrman makes the provocative case that many of our widely held beliefs concerning the divinity of Jesus, the Trinity, and the divine origins of the Bible itself are the results of both intentional and accidental alterations by scribes.

I will kisquoting believe someone who allows for wiggle room on an ehrmaan over someone who is absolutely, totally convinced that they are in the right and everyone else is absolutely and totally wrong. Misquoting Jesus was filled with page after page of Ehrman’s typical version of “shock and awe,” none of which is very often shocking or awing, but with none of the redeeming information and interesting facts that his other books usually contain.
Ehrman is now v atheist. The Canonization or dominance of any scripture depends upon the earthly power of its believers. This was not just for certain theological reasons, however.
His arguments create a space for one to consider that reading the Bible should not necessarily be a literal experience. These were instead matters of personal philosophy, and philosophies, of course, could be bookish.
Such originality as there is misquotihg Jesus Misquoted is in its engagingly accessible style. Yet, the conclusions that he put forth there are still stated here without recognition of some of the severe criticisms of his work the first go-around. There seems to be no way around the conclusion that books — as im- portant as they were to the early Christian movement — were almost always read aloud in social settings, such as in settings of worship.

Accidental or Intentional Revisions of Copyists

If the full meaning of the words of scrip- ture can be grasped only by studying them in Greek and Hebrewdoesn’t this mean that most Christians, who don’t read ancient lan- guages, will never have complete access to what God wants them to know?
All of this uncertainty was an especial problem for Protestants whose faith relied on the “word” as delivered in the Bible, but if that “word” was uncertain then doesn’t that weaken the foundations of that faith?
