Needless to say, the Jeeves stories are more endearing. The scene of the crime is New York, where Bertie enjoys a self-imposed exile from the censorius eye of aunt Agatha. Jeeves 1 – 10 of 15 books. You come in like a lion, you take your snootful, and you got out like a lamb. In appearance, Jeeves is described as “tall and dark and impressive”. The foppish aristocrat cannot survive for woosterr without his Shakespeare-quoting and problem-solving valet, however, and after a narrowly escaped forced marriage, a cottage fire, and a great butter theft, the celebrated literary odd couple are happy to return to the way things were.
Bertie becomes attached to these less conservative pieces and views Jeeves’s opposition to them as “hidebound and reactionary”. Bertie explains that the cats ate the fish and then escaped, and that the man that they took the hat from was the one who was just at lunch. During these stories, Wooster — or his friends — get into various scrapes and are saved by Jeeves. There are several other stories as well, most of them revolving around plots to woo standoffish young ladies or convince elderly relatives to fork over money, all of them going horribly wrong.
The downside to acquainting yourself with Wodehouse, at a ripe old age, is that you don’t glean anything else out of his writing p.g.wodejouse than the humor and that too appears to be strangely contrived in ways.
The rest are about Reggie Peppers, who is a Bertie Wooster-lite.
